folk. For many of us, creativity isn’t just about making something cool or beautiful … It’s a direct conversation with the divine, a way to connect with our higher purpose.

We often talk about God-given talents, but do we ever stop and think about how those gifts are our personal tool to communicate with God?

Let’s dive into that.

Your Talent is Your Conversation with God

From the moment we realize we have a creative gift—whether it’s tattooing, painting, writing, or making music—we’re having an intimate dialogue with the divine. It’s as if God dropped a special key in your spirit, and when you use that key, you unlock a conversation with Him. In Hoodoo, we honor our ancestors, but we also know that our creativity comes straight from the Creator, a spiritual force guiding us.

Every time you create, you’re asking, “What’s my purpose?” “How can I serve my community?” “How can I honor those who came before me?” And every time you create something authentically, you’re getting closer to those answers.

For me, tattooing is one of those sacred conversations. Every line, every design is a reflection of something higher. It’s me talking to God and saying, “I see what you gave me, and I’m using it to uplift, heal, and honor.”

Money is a Byproduct of Authentic Creation

When we create from that authentic place—from that divine conversation—the universe rewards us. Money is one of those rewards. It’s not the goal, but it’s a beautiful byproduct. When you’re in alignment with your gift, doors open. People recognize your work as something special, something deeper, and they want to support it. They invest in your art because they see the divinity in it.

Tattoo Philosophy asks us to examine why we create and what it means to truly express ourselves. It reminds us that the work we do is valuable—not just spiritually, but economically. When you create from your authentic self, you can turn your talent into a career. Making money is proof that you're living your truth, that you're offering the world something only you can bring.

At the Black Tattoo Culture Con, you’ll see this firsthand. Black tattoo artists who are rooted in their culture, their spirituality, and their creativity are thriving. They’re making money by staying true to themselves, not by chasing trends or trying to fit into someone else’s box.

Using Your Talents for Economic Stability Honors Your Ancestors

Our ancestors didn’t have the same opportunities we have today, but they had dreams, talents, and skills just like us. They paved the way so we could take those gifts and use them to build something bigger—something that not only sustains us but honors them. When we use our talents for economic stability, we’re saying, “I remember you. I honor your struggle, and I’m building something that carries on your legacy.”

Tattooing, for example, has deep roots in African and Black culture. It’s a practice that goes beyond aesthetics—it’s spiritual, cultural, and personal. When Black tattoo artists tap into that history and use their skills to create economic opportunities, they’re continuing a legacy of resilience and creativity that goes back generations.

Tattoo Philosophy asks us to think about the deeper meaning behind the marks we leave—on skin and in the world. It reminds us that everything we do has an impact, and by using our talents for good, we’re honoring the past and shaping the future.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

What Tattoo Philosophy Teaches Us

Tattoo Philosophy isn’t just about art—it’s about life. It teaches us that our talents are sacred, that they connect us to something greater. It also challenges us to think about how we use those talents. Are we creating authentically? Are we using our gifts to uplift ourselves and our communities? Are we honoring our ancestors with the work we do?

When we bring these questions into our creative process, we’re not just making art. We’re creating a legacy. And that’s what the Black Tattoo Culture Con is all about—celebrating the intersection of art, culture, spirituality, and economics.

So, as we prepare for this incredible event, think about how your talents are part of a bigger conversation. How are you using your creativity to talk to God, honor your ancestors, and create a legacy?

Meet me in the comments and let me know!

about: Black Tattoo Anthology®

An artist fellowship, living archive and digital campus dedicated to reclaiming, preserving, and reimagining Black tattoo culture across the diaspora. From the Collective of participating artists, to our Podcast where culture bearers speak their truths, the Anthology is both a record and a ritual—an invitation to witness how ink carries memory, identity, and liberation.

We invite you to become a paid subscriber to sustain this work. It’s about seeing tattoos as more than skin markings. We’re talking about tattoos as spiritual practice, ancient medicine, and even tattoo glamour magic. It’s a blend of art, culture, and deeper thinking—pairing unlikely concepts, like science and nature, to inspire unique, impactful ideas.

For me, this means embracing tattoo as a holistic experience, merging plant medicine, skin cutting, and life’s biggest questions. Tattooing has always been more than ink—it’s been teaching life lessons all along.

So here I am, a tattoo philosopher, exploring these deeper truths. Stay tuned, as this month I’m in the "test and tweak" phase—pairing the unlikely and sharing breakthroughs along the way.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

So … WT F*CK is Tattoo Philosophy? It’s not just about what’s aesthetically pleasing—it’s about what these markings mean and how they reflect our personal journeys, experiences, and identities. This philosophy examines the intersection of body art and life, treating tattoos as more than decoration but as powerful symbols that tell stories, embody values, and shape how we see ourselves.

Just like philosophical thought can ask questions about life, existence, and purpose, Tattoo Philosophy asks: Why do we mark our bodies? What do our tattoos say about who we are? How can tattooing be a transformative act?

Tattooing as a Rite of Passage

In many cultures, tattooing has long been seen as a rite of passage—a ritual that signifies a change in a person’s status or identity. Tattoo Philosophy embraces this idea, viewing the tattoo process as a sacred journey that marks pivotal moments in a person’s life. Whether it’s celebrating personal growth, honoring loved ones, or symbolizing healing, the tattoo is a permanent reminder of who we were at a specific time and how we’ve evolved since.

Tattoos as Personal Narrative

At its core, Tattoo Philosophy is about storytelling. Each tattoo represents a piece of a person’s life—a way to carry memories, beliefs, and experiences with them forever. Tattoos can be visual diaries, offering insight into a person’s history, struggles, triumphs, and dreams. Tattoo Philosophy challenges us to see our bodies as living canvases that tell our stories through permanent art.

Ask yourself: What story does your tattoo tell? That’s a key tenet of this philosophical approach.

The Connection Between Pain and Transformation

Tattooing is not without its discomfort. But this physical pain can be seen as symbolic—a kind of necessary struggle on the path to personal transformation. In Tattoo Philosophy, the pain associated with getting a tattoo is likened to the emotional and psychological struggles we endure in life. Just as the discomfort of the needle fades and leaves behind something beautiful, so too can life’s challenges lead to growth, wisdom, and strength.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The Body as a Sacred Canvas

Tattoo Philosophy also explores the relationship between the body and art. The human body becomes a sacred canvas—one that reflects our internal world on the outside. Tattooing can be seen as an act of devotion to oneself, a way of honoring one’s body by adorning it with meaningful symbols. This philosophy encourages us to think about how we treat our bodies and the significance of the art we choose to wear.

Cultural Significance and the Role of Tattooing in Society

Tattoo Philosophy doesn’t just examine the individual’s relationship with their ink—it also looks at the cultural significance of tattooing throughout history. Tattoos have been used in many societies to mark social status, express religious beliefs, or signify membership in certain groups. This philosophy invites us to consider the role tattoos play in shaping cultural identity and community bonds.

In modern society, tattooing is often seen as an act of rebellion or self-expression, but it still holds deep cultural meaning for many. By understanding these cultural roots, Tattoo Philosophy asks us to view tattoos as more than trends, but as part of a larger, collective story.

Healing Through Ink

Another important aspect of Tattoo Philosophy is the idea that tattoos can be healing. For many, getting tattooed is a way to reclaim their bodies after trauma or loss. The tattoo becomes a visual representation of survival, resilience, and recovery. Tattoo Philosophy encourages us to see tattoos as acts of self-empowerment and radical self-love, especially for those who have faced adversity.

Tattoos and the Future of Self-Expression

Tattoo Philosophy isn’t just about looking at the past—it also looks forward. How will tattoo culture evolve? How will future generations use tattoos to express their identities? As tattooing continues to grow in popularity, Tattoo Philosophy asks us to reflect on how this ancient art form is shaping modern identity and what it means for the future of self-expression.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Why Tattoo Philosophy Matters

So, WTF is Tattoo Philosophy really about? It’s about understanding the deeper significance behind the ink we wear. It’s about recognizing that tattoos are more than skin-deep—they’re connected to our life experiences, our pain, our healing, and our personal growth. Whether you’re a tattoo veteran or just thinking about getting your first one, embracing Tattoo Philosophy invites you to see your body as a canvas for telling your story and your tattoos as permanent reminders of your journey.

Tattoos may be beautiful pieces of art, but with a philosophical lens, they become so much more: reflections of who we are, what we value, and where we’ve been.

Next time someone asks you why you got your tattoo, you can tell them: It’s not just about the ink. It’s about the philosophy.

Artist Thoughts:

My approach to tattooing is more than skin-deep. It’s philosophical, spiritual, and deeply intentional. For those seeking a tattoo experience that resonates on multiple levels—personal, cultural, and spiritual—I am the ideal consultant (not necessarily your ideal artist, we don’t know!). Whether you’re exploring trauma-informed tattooing, seeking to honor your heritage, or simply looking for a deeper connection to your body art, I do my best to facilitate a thoughtful, intentional process that will transform how you view tattoos forever.

At my shop - Little INKPLAY Shop I train artists to offer holistic, culturally rich tattoo experiences rooted in African-centered healing and trauma-informed creative practices. Juneteenth started out as a commemoration among Blacks - started in Texas and marks our 2nd Independence Day …

But with all that Blacks STILL endure (including not being able to take off this Federal holiday, is it really independence?).

Now, here's where this date takes a turn (and leaves me raising an eyebrow)~

It didn't become a celebration until it was commercialized.

And then a federal holiday ... which doesn't lend itself to Black people actually being able to commemorate the day (most Black folk either can't afford to take off or not in a position to... much like MLK Day, but thas another convo)

And it's no surprise that big brands are trying to cash in on the day as Blackness trends. In fact, my fiance said a bar in our morning contemplations.

Which then shifts the idea of a Juneteenth holiday and commemorations from appreciation to appropriation. We see this with other popularized holidays like MLK Day and Memorial Day (which is no longer a Black-centric commemoration day though it was started by freed slaves of Charleston and a few white missionaries to give about 257 Union soldiers a proper burial).

Back to my fiance tho ...

He said Black people and culture are the selling point but NOT the sale - meaning people want to use Black culture to drive their profits without truly appreciating, RESPECTING and paying homage to the trials and tribulations of Black folk. This, sadly, happens A SHIT TON in the underbelly of tattoo, too.

I'ma get off my soapbox now cuz that's what Black Tattoo Anthology is for. And I got to share more of my heart as it relates to protecting Black culture in Grazia ... Fam! We're in FUCKING Grazia Mag ~

Thas amazing! Nor did I ever think I'd have BIG energy around hitting the intersection of beauty and activism. But we're here now. So *boop*

{Clearly I’m passionate of my critique of how Black culture is handled by white society and others}

Welp.

Instead of celebrating I asked that we commemorate yesterday. In coaching sessions, my apprentices and I sat in contemplation - them, as living legacies of my brand (& expert teachings) and me as an actual living legacy ... finally embracing dat ish.

Which brings me to a mini-lesson of clarifying yourself.

Always with the pragmatic life advice!

I wanted to offer you this time for deep contemplation as creatives (of any sort) learning to use your work as a tool for self-liberation, I challenge you to consider what you need to release to become a courageous & bold living legacy.

What would you want your legacy to be in the next 5 years - what are you working towards? What will people say about you?

Who are you, REALLY?

Are you showing up as who you say you are?

Are you all that you ought to be?

What sacrifices are you willing to make for your own liberation?

Don’t look for the answers right away.

Sleep on these questions.

Let your mind wander & visualize.

Chew on these questions ... like a Neem or licorice root chew stick.

Journal them and have a conversation with yourself.

Read the information like cowry shells in divination.
<p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{"url":"https://ipukekawaii.substack.com/p/black-tattoo-anthologys-first-press/comments","text":"Leave a Tattoo Anthology®

A living archive and digital campus dedicated to reclaiming, preserving, and reimagining Black tattoo culture across the diaspora. Founded and stewarded by Master Tattoo Artist and author Imani K. Brown®, the BTA documents our stories through scholarship, artistry, and community.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to cultural stewardship: honoring ancestral tattoo traditions, amplifying Black tattoo artists, and creating spaces where our creativity is remembered as inheritance, not erased as trend. From the Collective of participating artists, to our Podcast where culture bearers speak their truths, the Anthology is both a record and a ritual—an invitation to witness how ink carries memory, identity, and liberation.

We invite you to become a paid subscriber to sustain this work. Your support powers our digital campus, uplifts the artists who make up the Collective, and ensures that Black tattoo culture is preserved for future generations. | Website

Become a BTA Founding Member

Donate to BTA

Become a BTA Sponsor
