As we gear up for the Black Tattoo Culture Con, I can’t help but reflect on what it means to create, especially as Black folk. For many of us, creativity isn’t just about making something cool or beautiful … It’s a direct conversation with the divine, a way to connect with our higher purpose.

We often talk about God-given talents, but do we ever stop and think about how those gifts are our personal tool to communicate with God?

Let’s dive into that.

Your Talent is Your Conversation with God

From the moment we realize we have a creative gift—whether it’s tattooing, painting, writing, or making music—we’re having an intimate dialogue with the divine. It’s as if God dropped a special key in your spirit, and when you use that key, you unlock a conversation with Him. In Hoodoo, we honor our ancestors, but we also know that our creativity comes straight from the Creator, a spiritual force guiding us.

Every time you create, you’re asking, “What’s my purpose?” “How can I serve my community?” “How can I honor those who came before me?” And every time you create something authentically, you’re getting closer to those answers.

For me, tattooing is one of those sacred conversations. Every line, every design is a reflection of something higher. It’s me talking to God and saying, “I see what you gave me, and I’m using it to uplift, heal, and honor.”

Money is a Byproduct of Authentic Creation

When we create from that authentic place—from that divine conversation—the universe rewards us. Money is one of those rewards. It’s not the goal, but it’s a beautiful byproduct. When you’re in alignment with your gift, doors open. People recognize your work as something special, something deeper, and they want to support it. They invest in your art because they see the divinity in it.

Tattoo Philosophy asks us to examine why we create and what it means to truly express ourselves. It reminds us that the work we do is valuable—not just spiritually, but economically. Our ancestors didn’t have the same opportunities we have today, but they had dreams, talents, and skills just like us. As I reflect on September's thoughts and downloads, I realized it's time to introduce you all to tattoo philosophy. Inspired by creative philosopher DonYé Taylor, who disrupts traditional thinking, I began embracing this shift in my own tattoo practice … as a TATTOO PHILOSOPHER. Her newsletter, To Whom it May Concern, encouraged me to dive deeper into perspective—one of my favorite concepts.

Though I’ve been following her philosophy-ing (yes! I made it a verb, like people-ing, don’t @ me) for a while now and even have her e-books … it’s specifically September’s drop that put it all into PERSPECTIVE for me.

Tattoo philosophy isn’t just about creating beautiful art. It’s about seeing tattoos as more than skin markings. We’re talking about tattoos as spiritual practice, ancient medicine, and even tattoo glamour magic. It’s a blend of art, culture, and deeper thinking—pairing unlikely concepts, like science and nature, to inspire unique, impactful ideas.

For me, this means embracing tattoo as a holistic experience, merging plant medicine, skin cutting, and life’s biggest questions. Tattooing has always been more than ink—it’s been teaching life lessons all along.

So here I am, a tattoo philosopher, exploring these deeper truths. Stay tuned, as this month I’m in the "test and tweak" phase—pairing the unlikely and sharing breakthroughs along the way.

So … WT F*CK is Tattoo Philosophy?

You could simply say it’s understanding the deeper meaning behind tattoos.

At first glance, tattoos may seem like nothing more than decorative art—symbols, designs, or images people choose to wear on their skin. But if you dive deeper, you'll find that tattooing is far more than just ink on flesh.

Enter Tattoo Philosophy—

a way of thinking that merges the art of tattooing with life’s bigger questions about identity, meaning, and transformation.

But let’s a go a lil’ bit further. Walk with me ~

The Art of Expression Meets Life’s Big Questions

Tattoo Philosophy is the exploration of the deeper meaning behind the act of getting tattooed. It’s not just about what’s aesthetically pleasing—it’s about what these markings mean and how they reflect our personal journeys, experiences, and identities. This philosophy examines the intersection of body art and life, treating tattoos as more than decoration but as powerful symbols that tell stories, embody values, and shape how we see ourselves.

Just like philosophical thought can ask questions about life, existence, and purpose, Tattoo Philosophy asks: Why do we mark our bodies? What do our tattoos say about who we are? How can tattooing be a transformative act?

Tattooing as a Rite of Passage

In many cultures, tattooing has long been seen as a rite of passage—a ritual that signifies a change in a person’s status or identity. Tattoo Philosophy embraces this idea, viewing the tattoo process as a sacred journey that marks pivotal moments in a person’s life. Whether it’s celebrating personal growth, honoring loved ones, or symbolizing healing, the tattoo is a permanent reminder of who we were at a specific time and how we’ve evolved since.

Tattoos as Personal Narrative

At its core, Tattoo Philosophy is about storytelling. Each tattoo represents a piece of a person’s life—a way to carry memories, beliefs, and experiences with them forever. Tattoos can be visual diaries, offering insight into a person’s history, struggles, triumphs, and dreams. Tattoo Philosophy challenges us to see our bodies as living canvases that tell our stories through permanent art.

Tattooing is not without its discomfort. But this physical pain can be seen as symbolic—a kind of necessary struggle on the path to personal transformation. In Tattoo Philosophy, the pain associated with getting a tattoo is likened to the emotional and psychological struggles we endure in life. See, raised by a former Black panther, I was taught two very important life lessons ... that I continue to explore deeply through creativity + authenticity -

Lesson #1 - Trust NOTHING, examine everything

Lesson #2 - All content has INTENT

I recently told my apprentice recently how I grew up having to learn the history of the people the schools I went to were named after:

• J.O. Wilson Elementary (President of the American Colonization Society);

• R.H. Terrell Jr High (first African American judge in Washington, D.C.);

• Duke Ellington School of the Arts (one of 20th century music's most important creative forces);

• Clark Atlanta University (Davis Wasgatt Clark - 1st president of the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church) ...

And so on and so forth.

This information would take me down many rabbit holes, much like my wanting to understand the 'celebration' of Juneteenth.

That said ... I often look at the whole picture of things to make my differentiations - in this case differentiating a celebration (a happy commemoration) vs. a memorial (a gathering meant to commemorate people or events) vs. a commemoration (a remembrance but not necessarily a celebration).

I’m an 80’s baby. And I’ve watched this weird progression of this remembrance turn into something so far from its history. Juneteenth started out as a commemoration among Blacks - started in Texas and marks our 2nd Independence Day …

But with all that Blacks STILL endure (including not being able to take off this Federal holiday, is it really independence?).

Now, here's where this date takes a turn (and leaves me raising an eyebrow)~

1. It didn't become a celebration until it was commercialized.

2. And then a federal holiday ... which doesn't lend itself to Black people actually being able to commemorate the day (most Black folk either can't afford to take off or not in a position to... much like MLK Day, but thas another convo)

And it's no surprise that big brands are trying to cash in on the day as Blackness trends. In fact, my fiance said a bar in our morning contemplations. 

Which then shifts the idea of a Juneteenth holiday and commemorations from appreciation to appropriation. We see this with other popularized holidays like MLK Day and Memorial Day (which is no longer a Black-centric commemoration day though it was started by freed slaves of Charleston and a few white missionaries to give about 257 Union soldiers a proper burial).

Back to my fiance tho ...

He said Black people and culture are the selling point but NOT the sale - meaning people want to use Black culture to drive their profits without truly appreciating, RESPECTING and paying homage to the trials and tribulations of Black folk. This, sadly,  happens A SHIT TON in the underbelly of tattoo, too.

I'ma get off my soapbox now cuz that's what Black Tattoo Anthology is for. And I got to share more of my heart as it relates to protecting Black culture in Grazia ... Fam! We're in FUCKING Grazia Mag ~

Thas amazing! Nor did I ever think I'd have BIG energy around hitting the intersection of beauty and activism. But we're here now. So *boop*

Welp.

Instead of celebrating I asked that we commemorate yesterday. In coaching sessions, my apprentices and I sat in contemplation - them, as living legacies of my brand (& expert teachings) and me as an actual living legacy ... finally embracing dat ish.

Which brings me to a mini-lesson of clarifying yourself.

Always with the pragmatic life advice!

I wanted to offer you this time for deep contemplation as creatives (of any sort) learning to use your work as a tool for self-liberation, I challenge you to consider what you need to release to become a courageous & bold living legacy.

• What would you want your legacy to be in the next 5 years - what are you working towards? What will people say about you?

• Who are you, REALLY?

• Are you showing up as who you say you are?

• Are you all that you ought to be?

• What sacrifices are you willing to make for your own liberation?

Don’t look for the answers right away.

Sleep on these questions.

Let your mind wander & visualize.

Chew on these questions ... like a Neem or licorice root chew stick.

Journal them and have a conversation with yourself. 

Read the information like cowry shells in divination.
